In response, the U.S. Coast Guard formed an experimental aviation unit, pioneering Airborne Use of Force. The Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron’s success fundamentally changed counter-narcotic strategy.

U.S. Coast Guard @USCG - A successful counter-drug patrol for the crew of @USCG Cutter Richard Etheridge! Last week, they seized 174 pounds of cocaine and 17 pounds of marijuana—valued at $1.3 million—following the interdiction of a vessel eight nautical miles off Miami Beach.
80 percent of all U.S.-bound drug seizures occur at sea versus land, underscoring the impact of Coast Guard maritime interdiction and seamless teamwork with our partners @CBP and @HSI_HQ.
