Friedrich Merz (born November 11, 1955, in Brilon, Germany) is the Chancellor of Germany and chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). A trained lawyer, he served in the European Parliament (1989–1994) and later in the German Bundestag, where he became chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in the early 2000s.
Merz has long been committed to the transatlantic partnership. He served as chairman of Atlantik-Brücke, a prominent organization dedicated to strengthening German-American relations, reflecting his strong ties to the U.S. policy and business community. He is fluent in English and frequently engages international audiences directly.
His political relationship with former Chancellor Angela Merkel was marked by internal party rivalry. In the early 2000s, Merkel consolidated leadership within the CDU, and Merz stepped back from frontline politics in 2009. Their approaches differed in style and emphasis, with Merz often associated with more market-oriented economic positions and a sharper conservative profile.
During his time outside active politics, Merz worked in the private sector as a corporate lawyer and held senior supervisory and board positions in major companies, including serving as chairman of the supervisory board of BlackRock Germany. He returned to politics in the late 2010s, was elected CDU chairman in 2022, and became Chancellor in 2025
