The eyes of the world are turning today to the situation in the Middle East and the Gulf region. The ongoing strikes carried out by the Iranian regime against its neighbors are leading to significant destabilization of markets and disruption of the critically vital energy supply routes.
Many around the world are now speaking about the need to protect energy facilities, the impermissibility of using “energy terrorism” against entire peoples, and the assurance of freedom and security in navigation. All of this truly represents a global interest. And much of these statements echo what Ukraine was saying in 2022 and 2023 regarding Russia’s naval blockade of its ports and its attempts to deprive it of access to global trade.
For years, Russia has been doing something akin to what the Iranian regime is doing today toward the infrastructure in its region, and that against Ukraine’s energy system. Such deliberate aggression against the energy sector cannot have any motive other than to inflict suffering on entire peoples—whether it concerns the Russian strikes on our power stations and gas production, or the current attacks carried out by the Iranian regime against its surroundings. For this reason, it is crucially important that international cooperation, even now, be able to provide real security responses for everyone, including Europe.
The strikes carried out by the remnants of the Iranian regime against Qatar, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and other countries represent, in their essence, an assault on global stability and energy security in Europe. And Ukraine is ready to join joint security initiatives in order to achieve stability as quickly as possible. Ukraine has long proposed the creation of realistic and effective tools to hold accountable those who obstruct maritime trade routes, destroy normal navigation, and target energy infrastructure. And Ukraine suffered this winter under Russian strikes, while the Middle East and Gulf region today face the same evil.
Russia and the Iranian regime are not cooperating by chance. They must be stopped, and it falls to every responsible world leader to ensure true stability and secure safety. Together, we are undoubtedly stronger.
