The History of the Space Program. In 1957, the beeps from Sputnik, a small Russian satellite, sent the Cold War between the Soviet Union and United States into a space race. Teasel Muir-Harmony of the Air & Space Museum chronicled how NASA got from Al Shepard rocketing into low orbit in 1961 to Neil Armstrong taking "one small step" on the lunar surface in 1969 and today's mission to return humans to the Moon.
