Rep. Mike Collins @RepMikeCollins - On this day in history in 1865, President Abraham Lincoln was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C.
Booth, being a theater kid, was familiar with the play and had a tendency for dramatic violence. He knew which line would trigger laughter from the crowd and help mask the sound of his gunshot. At his cue, during the audience’s roar of laughter, Booth shot President Lincoln and then shouted “Sic semper tyrannis!” before fleeing the scene on horseback.
Lincoln died the next morning, becoming the first U.S. president to be assassinated.
