ZitoSalena @ZitoSalena - On the day celebrating the 100th anniversary of my families parish, Nativity of our Lord on the North Side of Pittsburgh, it closed. It's where my parents were married, all the Zito, children, grandchildren, & great grandchildren were baptized. It's where I sat in the front row with my grandparents with a lace chapel veil and listened to the Latin Mass. It's where I went to grade school, attended hundreds of weddings, funerals, Christmases, Easter's & Sunday Mass. I write a lot about place and the importance of it in our lives the things and people and events that keep us rooted to who we are. This one hurts. It was built to accommodate a boom of families moving to the upper north side of Pittsburgh; never really meant to be anything more than a church that you walked to, it was a neighborhood full of working class families often have 5 to 7 children; most of them were steel workers, plumbers, electricians and we even had an NFL referee! The parking situation was atrocious for those families who didn't live within walking distance. Our school had basketball teams and football teams and cheerleaders, church picnics, a massive priory, an active women's guild and an active men's guild.
First picture is what the altar look like before they "modernized it" second photo is from the choir loft after they modernized the altar. That's my eighth grade graduation class and the last picture is of me and my dad and I'm not sure why anyone took a photo of us in church. The last time I went to Mass here was not that long ago with my parents.
Yesterday at Mass at my current parish, it was once again filled to the rafters with people standing on both sides of the aisle all the way up to the front row. There were hundreds of kids under the age of 10 attending faith formation as well. All four parking lots were packed, and people were parking anywhere they could squeeze in. As I was walking in a man hustled past me, grumbling to me about how hard it is lately to find a parking space and I said to him "that's a good problem to have."
I was thinking about Nativity.

ZitoSalena @ZitoSalena - If there is no diagonal swath cut out for Appalachia leaving out all 432 counties of this unique culture & region not sure this is a real map--also if you are calling counties in Pennsylvania, such as Bedford, Westmoreland, Fayette, Somerset, Cambria, etc., the Northeast you have clearly never been to those & about a dozen more counties
