A massive French cargo ship loaded with 3,000 tons of wartime explosives had collided with another vessel and caught fire. As the burning, abandoned ship drifted directly toward the city docks, the entire port began scrambling for their lives.
But 41-year-old railway dispatcher Vince Coleman didn't run. From his office near Pier 6, he realized a terrifying truth: an incoming overnight passenger train carrying 300 people was blindly speeding right into the blast zone.
While his co-workers desperately fled the impending apocalypse, Coleman sat back down at his telegraph desk. Knowing he only had seconds left to live, he frantically tapped out a final warning down the rail line.
"Hold up the train," he transmitted. "Ammunition ship afire in harbor making for Pier 6 and will explode. Guess this will be my last message. Good-bye boys."
Moments later, the ship detonated in what remains the largest man-made explosion prior to the atomic bomb. The blast instantly vaporized the pier, flattened the city, and killed Coleman on the spot. But his selfless final message reached the incoming train just in time. The conductor slammed on the brakes safely outside the blast radius, and all 300 passengers survived.
