The USS Wasp (CV-7) sank on September 15 1942 after being attacked by the Japanese submarine I-19 which launched several deadly torpedoes triggering massive explosions and fire aboard the ship. Most of the crew were successfully evacuated while 193 sailors lost their lives.
The Wasp was finally discovered in 2019 and found on the seabed at a depth of over 4,000 meters in the Coral Sea. Underwater footage shows her lying intact.
The Wasp will not be raised or exploited; the site is being treated as a memorial honoring the sailors who died in action.
