Amazing Maps @amazingmap - The Shipping Forecast is a marine weather forecast produced by the UK Met Office and broadcast by the BBC, primarily for ships around the British Isles and nearby waters.
Over time, it became famous far beyond maritime circles because of its distinctive rhythm, unusual region names and late-night radio broadcasts. Names such as Dogger, Viking, Fisher and German Bight are instantly recognisable to many people in the UK despite most listeners having never sailed there.
The forecast has been broadcast in some form since the 19th century and remains an important safety service for mariners today. For many others, however, it has also become an unexpected piece of British cultural nostalgia.
