Wolf of X @WolfofX - A four-kilometre stretch of river in the Peruvian Amazon reaches temperatures of up to 100°C.
Known as the Boiling River, it's hot enough to kill animals that fall into it despite being more than 700 kilometres from the nearest active volcano.
The river, known locally as Shanay-Timpishka, is located in the Mayantuyacu region of Peru and is considered sacred by Indigenous communities.
While not every section reaches boiling temperatures, some of its hottest waters approach 100°C, with average temperatures in the hottest stretches measuring around 86°C.
What makes the Boiling River so remarkable is its location.
Most geothermal rivers are found near active volcanoes, yet Shanay-Timpishka exists in a region with no known volcanic activity nearby.
For years, scientists struggled to explain how such a river could exist.
Researchers now believe rainwater seeps deep underground through faults and cracks, where it is heated by the Earth's natural geothermal energy before returning to the surface through hot springs that feed the river.
The phenomenon gained worldwide attention through the work of geothermal scientist Andrés Ruzo, who began studying the river in 2011.
Today, the Boiling River remains one of the Amazon's most extraordinary natural wonders and continues to provide scientists with valuable insights into geothermal systems, rainforest ecology, and the potential impacts of extreme heat on tropical environments.
