For a long time, most of them did. Then something changed. The wars got long, the bureaucracy got bigger, and too many at the top started treating the uniform like a career ladder instead of a calling. The troops paid the price while accountability stayed somewhere else.
I finally wrote about what I saw over those years and why the recent moves at the top were necessary.
