Great empires fall when they get so blinded to reality that they have no choice except to rule in increasingly incoherent and tyrannical ways in order to preserve their own legitimacy. Expect more of this; the breaking point will be when the sovereign debt crisis mandates a global fiscal order. Change doesn't have to be violent. USSR wasn't violent.
