Trad West @trad_west_ - Vlad III of Wallachia, remembered by history as Dracula, was born on one of Europe’s most chaotic frontiers.
His father, Vlad II Dracul, belonged to the Order of the Dragon, a chivalric order founded by Sigismund of Luxembourg to defend Christian lands against Ottoman expansion. From his father’s title came the name Drăculea, Dracula, meaning “son of Dracul,” or “son of the Dragon.”
As a boy, Vlad was sent with his brother Radu as a hostage to the Ottoman court, a political guarantee of his father’s loyalty. There he learned the language, customs, military methods, and internal weaknesses of the power that would later become his greatest enemy.
When Vlad returned to Wallachia, his homeland was caught between larger powers. Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, rival nobles, and competing claimants all fought to control the small principality.
Vlad eventually seized the throne and ruled with a severity that made his name feared across the region. His methods were harsh even by medieval standards, but his political aim was clear: to strengthen Wallachia, break the power of disloyal nobles, and resist Ottoman domination.
In 1462, Sultan Mehmed II, the conqueror of Constantinople, marched against Wallachia with a far larger army.
