Of course, the biggest concern people bring up is, “What if the game gets pulled from the store?” That is a fair concern, but it is also something we have already seen countless times with mobile games. Look at games like Cardfight!! Vanguard ZERO. So many people spent time and money on mobile games only for them to eventually shut down or disappear. A lot of players have already experienced the painful side of digital-only access.
When it comes to stores like GameFly , LootBoxGamingUS , and VideoGamesPlus_ , I respect why they are standing up for physical games. I understand that physical media matters to them and to their customers. But this is also why I respect companies like @gamestop and @Cex for branching out. GameStop moved into merchandise, shirts, Funko Pops, mugs, trading card games, collectibles, consoles, and accessories. CeX sells phones, laptops, consoles, games, DVDs, Blu-rays, and other tech. So if physical games continue to decline, they at least have other sources of income to lean on.
At the end of the day, physical discs also take up space. For collectors, that is part of the joy. For others, it becomes storage, clutter, shelves, boxes, and extra room needed in the house. Everyone has a different relationship with physical media, and both sides have valid points.
That being said, getting rid of physical media creates its own problems. If companies move fully digital, then they have to push digital-only consoles. Then they release upgraded versions of those same consoles. Then consumers are expected to keep adjusting to whatever direction the industry moves next.
And for the people blaming Rockstar Games, I think that blame is too simple. Society as a whole has been moving toward digital for years. You can buy desktop computers with no disc drive. You can buy laptops with no disc drive. Movies, music, software, books, and games have all been shifting digital for a long time. So blaming one company for what PlayStation or the wider gaming industry chooses to do does not feel fair.
Physical games matter. Digital games are convenient. Both have pros and cons. I just think this conversation deserves more honesty, more balance, and more respect for the people on both sides.
