KC-10 Driver @MCCCANM - “Burning the Piano” is an important tradition in military aviation, around the world.
In this case, a ceremony for the crew of the B-52 crash.
It’s not clear how this originated; some say a piano playing pilot would play tributes to other RAF pilots as they got shot down, until he himself was shot down & they then burned the piano so nobody else could play it. Others say the RAF forced their pilots to take piano lessons until one base burned theirs down, lessons were canceled & soon other bases had terrible accidents where the pianos burned & the pilots were no longer required to take lessons.
Now, it can be used as a memorial, or as a party. It kind of just depends, but a proper military pilot party often involves a ceremonial burning of a piano.

Yesterday was the memorial service for the Torch11 crew of the doomed B-52. Such an accident touches everyone in the flight test community but especially those at the Air Force Test Wings. The memorial service culminated in traditional piano burnings at Edwards and Eglin AFBs.
