Mary "pondered things in her heart.” (Luke 1:29, Luke 2:51) We shouldn’t read the Word of God in our daily devotional and then forget about it. Mary provides an excellent example of how we are to immerse ourselves in the Word of God. By thinking about it, ruminating over it, and processing the truths we glean from our time spent with Him our wisdom and knowledge expand proportionally.
2. We should study God’s Word.
a. Ps 119:15 - “I meditate on Your precepts and consider Your ways."
b. Psalm 111:12 - “Praise be to you, Lord; teach me your decrees."c. Psalms 1:1-2 - "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.”
3. We should write down what we learn (journal). God through His prophets and servants, wrote His decrees, commandments, precepts for further study and future generations in the Bible. Writing your thoughts, beliefs, emotions in a journal is an intimate reflection of you. Your journal can become a written conversation with the Lord.
a. Psalm 102:18 - "Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord…"
b. Psalm 56:8 - "Record my misery; list my tears on your scroll— are they not in your record?"
c. Jeremiah 30:1-2 - “This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: "This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Write in a book all the words I have spoken to you.’"
We are not required to journal and each of you know what methods of learning fits you best. I will say from time to time I will review one of my past journals. It is like pulling back a curtain and you are taken back in time. You remember the emotions, circumstances, mental challenges you experienced. Then you remember how God delivered you out of a difficult time or blessed you unexpectedly and I find myself thanking Him again. It fills my heart with joy.
