US business activity grew at its fastest pace in more than four years as stronger demand and a rosier outlook fueled a wave of hiring. The S&P Global flash US composite purchasing managers index climbed to 56 in August, according to data released Friday, the highest reading since April 2022. Figures above 50 indicate expansion.
"US business is booming, with firms reporting the fastest output growth for over four years," Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said in a statement.
"Jobs growth has also shown a welcome revival in August, with employers gaining in confidence as concerns fade over the negative economic impacts of tariffs and the conflict in the Middle East," he said. Activity at service providers rose to 56.8, matching the highest level since March 2022. The pickup in the service industry helped offset slower growth at factories.
The group's manufacturing gauge fell to 53.2, a five-month low but still in expansionary territory, as raw material shortages and supply chain delays restrained production. Friday's report showed businesses adding workers at the fastest clip since January 2025. Hiring picked up at both manufacturers and service providers, but employment growth was particularly strong in the service sector.
At the same time, price pressures eased. Input costs expanded in August at the slowest pace since the start of the Iran war. A measure of future output climbed to a nine-month high. But the conflict in the Middle East "remains a key area of concern for businesses, especially via the impact on supply lines and energy prices," Williamson said. " Price pressures, while fading, also remain elevated and prone to renewed upward pressures should energy prices rise again."
