>>192468Father V @father_rmv - Our Lady of Consolation is a title given to the Virgin Mary, also known as Comforter of the Afflicted. It presents her as a mother who draws near to those in sorrow and offers the comfort that comes through her Son.
The title has deep roots in Augustinian tradition. According to that tradition, Mary appeared to Saint Monica while Monica grieved the death of her husband and the wayward life of her son Augustine. Mary gave her a leather belt, or cincture, as a visible sign of her presence and protection. Monica wore it from that day and later recommended it to Augustine after his conversion. The belt became a distinctive part of the Augustinian habit and the basis for a confraternity that spread the devotion among both religious and lay people. In this light Mary is seen as especially close to those who need companionship and encouragement.
A separate and equally ancient strand of the devotion centers on Turin. Tradition holds that an icon of the Virgin, sometimes said to have been painted by Saint Luke, was brought from the East by Saint Eusebius and given to Saint Maximus, the first bishop of Turin, in the fourth or fifth century. The image was hidden during later turmoil and later recovered in 1104 after a blind pilgrim from France received a vision directing him to the ruins of an old chapel. When the icon was unearthed, the pilgrim’s sight was restored. The shrine that grew around the image, known as La Consolata, became a place of pilgrimage, and the city of Turin later took Our Lady of Consolation as its patroness.
In the seventeenth century the same title took on new life in Luxembourg. During years of war, plague, and famine a Jesuit priest carried a wooden statue of Mary and the Child in procession. The statue was later placed in a chapel outside the city walls and soon attracted pilgrims who reported healings and other favors. Our Lady of Consolation was named patroness first of the city and then of the entire duchy.
The title itself appears in the Litany of Loreto as Consolatrix Afflictorum. It expresses a simple theological conviction: Jesus is the consolation of the world, and Mary, who stood at the foot of the Cross and was herself comforted by the hope of the Resurrection, now consoles those who suffer. Shrines dedicated to her under this name arose in many places, including Carey, Ohio, where a replica of the Luxembourg statue arrived in 1875, and West Grinstead in England. Across these sites the same figure is honored: not a distant queen, but a mother who stays with her children in their affliction and points them toward the source of true comfort.
