Cardinals form pairs that often stay together for years, and unlike most songbirds, they don't split up when nesting ends. They hold the same territory through winter, feeding a few feet apart, staying in contact with a short sharp chip note when one moves out of sight.
They sing together too. Cardinals are one of the few North American songbirds where the female sings as much as the male, and a bonded pair will trade the same phrase back and forth, one answering the other. Researchers think she's telling him what's happening at the nest.
And he feeds her. During courtship he'll take a seed, hop over, and pass it directly into her beak. If you've watched two cardinals, that's probably what you saw.
They're also year-round residents. No migration, no leaving. Whatever the winter does, they're in it together, in your yard, the whole time.
Nothing about this is unusual to them. It's just what a cardinal's life looks like, happening ten feet from your kitchen window, mostly unnoticed.
