I have an update from the FLOTUS Pool:
First Lady Melania Trump arrived with President Xi Jinping's spouse Madame Peng Liyuan at 11:43 am to the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art where they plan to visit the Peacock Room and other exhibits.
They were greeted by Chase Robinson, Director, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art and Danielle Bennett, Deputy Director for Collections and Exhibitions, Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art
The First Lady is wearing a black single-breasted light tweed jacket and a black skirt by Alexander McQueen. Her shoes are black Christian Louboutin stilettos.
First Lady Melania Trump and Madame Peng Liyuan first visited the Peacock Room in the museum, designed to showcase a Chinese porcelain collection and was remodeled in 2022.
The tour is led by Chase Robinson, Director, Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art and Jan Stuart, Melvin R. Seiden Curator of Chinese Art, National Museum of Asian Art.
They first viewed James McNeill Whistler painting, The Princess from the Land of Porcelain. The painting features a woman in a kimono, holding a fan.
“It’s beautiful, incredible” the First Lady remarked as the curators described the exhibits in the room.
Press was escorted out at 11:55 am
The entire room is decorated in blue, green, and gold with a painting of two fighting peacocks on the main wall, depicting a conflict between 'Art and Money.'
The room was designed by architect Thomas Jeckyll and painted by artist James McNeill Whistler in the 1870s for English shipping magnate Frederick R. Leyland.
The blue and white Qing dynasty (1644-1911) porcelain collection is the feature display in the room.
The collection was later bought by art collector Charles Lang Freer before it was acquired by the Smithsonian in 1920.
The pair are also expected to go on a private tour of Gallery 13, a showcase of imperial and historical Chinese art focused on the historical rules of Chinese dynasties from 1368 to 1912.
First Lady Melania Trump and Madame Peng Liyuan emerged at 12:09 pm to greet schoolchildren standing on the steps of the entrance.
