A Midwestern Doctor @MidwesternDoc - Video: I’ve long observed many problems in science originate from an erroneous interpretation of a philosophical concept.
Consider evidence-based medicine. Its 1996 definition called for integrating clinical expertise with the best available external evidence, while taking account of the individual patient’s circumstances, rights and preferences.
It did not reduce medical judgment to repeating an expert’s conclusion.
In my article, I discuss the problem of dismissing observational vaccine research because it is not a randomized trial while also rejecting proposed randomized comparisons on ethical grounds.
The limitations of an observational study still matter. But asking for research that will not be conducted leaves the original question unanswered.
I believe dismissing the available observational research solely because it is not a placebo-controlled trial distorts the original intent of evidence-based medicine.

A Midwestern Doctor @MidwesternDoc - Video: In Dr. Robert Mendelsohn's 1979 book, Confessions of a Medical Heretic, he argued that medicine often functioned as a religion, with doctors as priests, hospitals as temples, and practices that patients were expected to accept on faith.
Of these points, I spent by far the most time pondering his argument vaccines were medicine’s holy water.
Here, Tucker Carlson and Cheryl Hines discuss that same religious dimension.
Mendelsohn also described how doctors who challenged established practices could be treated as heretics. Nonetheless, many of the issues Mendelsohn highlighted persist to the present day.

A Midwestern Doctor @MidwesternDoc - That attachment also shapes how evidence is interpreted.
I examine the use of other vaccines as trial comparators, short monitoring windows, and the arguments used to dismiss research that challenges prevailing assumptions.
