Jan.21, 2017 – Massive women’s marches (including men) in DC and throughout the world protesting Trump’s policies on women and other issues. Christine marches in DC; Jenny in Boston, Ali in SF;
Trump give speech at CIA blasting the press and overtly lying. Kellyanne Conway goes on TV repeating the lies. He is claiming that the crowds at his inauguration were the largest in history (Yikes!). Park Service shows arial shots comparing crowds at Obama versus his inaug. Trump gets pissed at Park Service. He is acting amaxingly unpresidential!

Jan. 24, 2017 – Dinner with Jono Mermin and Sara Zeigler from CDC to discuss elimination of HCV. He wants my help in getting to the powers that be to get resoruces since I pulled off a major coup with PEPFAR. He wants a USA PEPFAR for HCV. I told them that this is what we are doing as a demonstration project in washingotn, DC with Shyam Kottilil, Henry Masur, and Carl Dieffenbach.
Jan. 26, 2017 – I hold Influenza Immunity Meeting to take stock of why we have such a poor influenza vaccine. Meeting in 31/6C-06 with intramural scientists (Jeff Taubenberger, Ron Germain, Susan Moir, Jon Yewdell) and DMID (Emily Elberding, David Spiro) and DAIT (Dan Rotrosen, Chuck Hackett) and DAIDS (Carl Dieffenbach) folks and VRC (Mascola, Graham, Arian McDermott). My purpose is to re-energize the influenza research agenda. I remarked that I have been Director, NIAID for 32 years and our influenza vaccines are poor and no better than they were 32 years ago. We must get back to basics and answer some unanswered fundamental questions about immunology of influenza, immunogen design, etc.
Jan. 28, 2017 – Went to the Alfalfa Club Ball at the Capitol Hilton on 16th and K Street at the invitation of Catherine and Wayne Reynolds. Amazing evening. Usual “A” list of Who’s Who in DC. Michael Bloomberg was the outgoing President of the Alfalfa Club and Bob Gates is incoming. Hilarious comedy. Also, speech by Vernon Jordan as well as VP Mike Pence. After the Ball went to Café Milano as guest of the Reynolds and sat at Table with Rex Tillerson. Great conversation about DC politics. Fred Hiatt of Washington Post in his usual intellectual manner expressed concern about the Trump antics. However, he feels that the press cannot play into being painted by Trump as “the opposition party”. At the ball saw everyone – Ivanka Trump, etc.
