June 27, 2016 – Had beautiful reception at the Canadian Embassy in my honor for receiving the Gairdner Global Health Award. Many friends from NIH and elsewhere attended. Also, Denise and Jack, Joanne and Jim, etc.
July 1, 2016 – Meet with the POTUS in the Oval Office of the White House together with Tom frieden and Sylvia Burwell to update him on the Zika situation. The Congress has still not appropriated the money for Zika that the POTUS has requested ($1.9 billion) and there is a pissing match back and forth between the Dems and the GOP regarding the funding. The GOP want to give the money but with “poison pill” provisions such as taking the money from the Affordable Care Act and from the Ebola account and they want to unfund Planned Parenthood. The Dems reject this and the Congress will leave for their 4th of July break without acting
July 2-11, 2016 – Much press exposure for me virtually every day associated with Zika and my explaining the need for money for vaccine, etc. Congress leaves for the Convention and for the summer break without an Zika Appropriations. The press are pounding them (mostly the GOP) for playing politics with a public health crisis.
July 11, 2016 – 60 Minutes did filming here at VRC on Zika and took footage to do a profile on me in the future.
July 14-21, 2016 – Trip to Durban, South Africa for the 21st International AIDS Society (IAS) meeting. Gave Keynote at the CURE Symposium; received the President’s Award from the IAS. Great meeting. Much praise and recognition.
Now have 2nd person in Florida with local transmission of Zika!! – a male with no possibility of sexual transmissions to him; first person a few days ago was a 23 yo pregnant woman. Had important phone call at 9:00 PM with HHS Secretary Burwell, Tom Frieden, me and others from HHS on how we will handle the contentious issue of potentially doing a travel alert for Florida for pregnant women, which would trigger the questions of what do you do with pregnant women who live in the Florida region. State authorities, particularly Texas are very upset about the possibility of CDC issuing a travel alert for their state. As usual, Sylvia Burwell either e-mails or calls me after the conference calls and seeks my independent counsel regarding sensitive policy issues.
July 22, 2016 - I was attacked by “Ransonware” and my entire unprotected folder (C Drive – Word Files) was encrypted. Luckily, I had a backup of most of my historical daily notes and my autobiography was on a separate, nonaccessible folder. However, I lost all of the letters that I have ever written as well as other important documents in the Word Files folder. I had originally created this folde for the confidential files that I made right after the anthrax attacks since I did not want them accessible to anyone. However, I soon began putting other important documents into that folder – Bad idea!!!
