brought up that he was concerned that I did not tell him about the Chinese guy (He Jiankui) who did germ-line editing for HIV, when I knew about it 1 week before the guy announced it at an international meeting. This is paranoia. I had no idea the guy was going to announce this egregiously unethical experiment at a meeting. My involvement was that 1 week before the announcement, Marilyn Marchionne (AP) called me and asked for a comment on a paper that she heard was going to come out on germ line gene editing to “prevent the child from getting HIV”. I told her this was totally unethical and I wanted no part of it. No reason to tell Francis since I thought that was the end of it. When the guy announced it at an international meeting 1 week later, Francis now tells me that I knew about it 1 week before the meeting and should have told him. Really??? I had not idea it would be announced at a meeting.
Jan. 11, 2019 – Gave Keynote Lecture on Malaria at an NAS symposium at the NAS headquarters in DC. Extremely well-received. I ad lib-ed a lot. Also, was supposed to go to White House to discuss Ebola vaccine situation, but was cancelled due to “pressing issues” see above and the chaos in the WH.
Did an interview on Sirius Radio with Marc Siegel. Was on with Scott Gottlieb (FDA Commissioner) range of topics on public health – influenza season, food safety, AFM, etc.
Jan 14, 2019 – Had major snow storm yesterday (Sunday) – 8 to 12 inches. Government closed today. Was on CNN today in an interview with Elizabeth Cohen on universal flu vaccine. Prep-recorded it last week.
Preparing the roll-out for the (hopefully) announcement of the Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic in the USA initiative at the SOTU address on Jan. 29. POTUS is getting into more trouble. The USG has now been closed for 23 days due to Trump wanting $5 billion for his wall. Longest shutdown in history. Also, NY Times published story that FBI has been investigating Trump as an agent of Russia by acting on their behalf.
