Dec. 6, 2019 – Unusual meeting in the NIH SCIF with the NSC (Erin ?, O’Neill, Phil Ferro) and people from State Department China Desk. Issue is the role that the Chinese are playing in building a large genetics capability in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which is the “seat” of the African Union (AU). Apparently, there is a movement to create an African CDC and genetics capability will be an important part of it. There is great concern that if the Chinese take the lead in building the genetics facility in Addis, then they will control the enormous amount of information on human, plant and animal genetics in Africa. Chinese genetics – Chinese Genetics Institute (CG I). NSC sees this as a security risk for us and the discussion is how we can stop this and figure out other ways to building that building such as paying for it ourselves. The Chinese originally offered to build it , but with a couple years delay. The Western nations were asleep at the wheel and let the agreement go forward without realizing the potential downside. Now everyone is exercised that we need to stop this. Deb Birx is particularly concerned from her vantage point as head of PEPFAR. I was called to the meeting because of my “knowledge and standing and because I am Tony Fauci”. We will have additional meetings about this.
Dec. 7, 2019 – Attended a reception at the home of Tim Shriver and Linda Potter (she was not there). Reception also sponsored by John (Hedge) and Maureen Bridgeland. It was to celebrate the accomplishments of Malaria No More and to honor former President of Tanzania Jakaya Kikwete. Also present was Mark Green (Adminsitrator of USAID) and various African Ambassadors to the USA> Tim and Hedge were extremely gracious to me in their remarks pointing out that I was the architect of PEPFAR and also played a major role in the creation of PMI. Also, Tim spoke to me at length about his concern regarding the anti-VAXX activities of his cousin RFK, Jr. Tim said it is causing real problems within the Kennedy family.
Dec. 8, 2019 – Weent to annual Christmas party at home of Nina Totenberg and David Reines. Usual DC crowd there. Had nice discussion with Scott Simon (CBS) and his wife (Scott did a feature on me a few years ago. Also, discussed thepolitical situation with Marrick Garland
Dec. 9, 2019 – Did an interview on Canadian Radio (CJAD) on the HIV vaccine trials that are ongoing, and an overview of HIV in general. Also, did podcast on Ebols for “United for Medical research” Found out that I have PCR-proven Influenza A 2009 H1. Scheduled to go to Miami tomorrow to give Keynote for the HIV persistence meeting. Have taped the talk today
