USGS Volcanoes @USGSVolcanoes - Kīlauea Status Report-Oct. 7, 2026
New satellite imagery confirms a shallow magma intrusion (dike) occurred beneath Kaluapele, north of Halemaʻumaʻu, on September. 30-Oct. 1, 2026. The intrusion followed fracture systems formed during the 2018 summit collapse and produced earthquakes, ground deformation, and new surface cracks.
Scientists say Kīlauea's recent behavior is not longer forecastable. Possible outcomes include:
• Return to lava fountaining
• Continued underground magma intrusions
• Formation of new summit vents
• Magma migration into rift zones
• The eruption ending altogether
Kīlauea remains at Volcano Alert Level WATCH and Aviation Color Code ORANGE.

: Map shows earthquakes and ground deformation associated with recent intrusive activity. Yellow dashed line marks the intrusion location.
: Photo shows a crack on the caldera floor associated with the intrusion and accompanying thermal image.
