For the state of Ohio, ABC News’s flagrant lies are personal. Anduril is in the midst of a major manufacturing project in Pickaway County, Ohio—in fact, it’s the largest single job-creation project in the state’s history. Anduril is investing nearly $1 billion, expects to create more than 4,000 high-paying jobs, and is already producing advanced unmanned systems right here in the state of Ohio. It is no exaggeration to say my constituents—Ohio workers, suppliers, and communities—are counting on this investment. ABC’s false reporting was calculated to damage Anduril’s reputation and, by extension, the livelihoods of Ohioans.
But here’s where this saga gets even more appalling. Instead of owning up to their mistakes, issuing a retraction, and informing the public of their errors, ABC News simply deleted the entire story from existence with no explanation. It was only after sustained criticism that ABC News republished a revised version with a buried editor’s note admitting “errors in the description of certain company investments, government contracts and event chronologies.” You would expect such a comically botched cover-up in Soviet Russia, not the United States of America. But it was too late. Before it was deleted, their hit job had already spread far and wide on social media, thanks in part to Democratic officials, and caused real harm.
ABC News operates under broadcast licenses issued by the FCC. Those licenses are a privilege, not a right. They require service of the public interest. Publishing baseless liberal hit pieces to influence an election, harm American companies, and smear the President’s family does not serve the public interest. It is the exact behavior that has driven public confidence in the news media to historic lows
Thus, I urge the Commission to open a formal investigation into ABC News’s political hit job. We must know who signed off on the publication of this false story, who may have stood to profit from the attack, and whether ABC News’s conduct violated its obligations as a licensee. A free press is essential to a flourishing republic but controlled opposition running Democrat lies undermines Americans’ faith in our democracy.
The American people, and the workers in Ohio whose jobs were put at risk by this reporting, deserve answers and accountability. I look forward to your prompt response and the results of a thorough inquiry.
