>>196110According to the Journal, you pressed Mr. Deters to pay $100,000 toward your personal American Express debt while seeking intervention from Trump Administration officials in his tax and legal matters, offering to be his “Trump ride or die, forever and ever.” The report also details how you contacted then-IRS Commissioner Billy Long seeking favorable treatment for Mr. Deters in his long-running tax dispute with the agency. You then reportedly sent Mr. Deters instructions on how to wire the money to your American Express account six days prior to your confirmation hearing before the United States Senate. As Mr. Deters himself stated in a televised interview on October 8, 2026, “it was all quid pro quo.”
If substantiated, your attempt to solicit favors from federal officials in exchange for personal payment demonstrates, at a minimum, that you are unfit to represent the United States abroad. Such influence peddling also warrants immediate investigation by the appropriate authorities into whether you violated federal bribery and public corruption laws.
The October 7, 2026 report follows earlier Journal reporting regarding your conduct while in office, including your public statements that the United States had brought about the collapse of the Romanian Government and could do likewise in Greece, your deeply concerning relationship with lobbyist Christos Marafatsos, and your advocacy on behalf of the foreign-owned Aktor Group in official meetings with senior ministers.
Together, these reports paint a disturbing picture of an ambassador using her official position and access to senior political appointees to advance the private interests of those willing to pay. I have already demanded answers from Secretary Rubio and the Department of State regarding the Wall Street Journal’s earlier reports. I will pursue every available avenue of congressional oversight to establish the facts and seek accountability. The office of ambassador is a public trust, not a vehicle for you to “make money”. If you sought to leverage your official position in exchange for personal payment, you betrayed that trust and should resign immediately.
These allegations demand forthright responses from you. I request that you appear before the House Foreign Affairs Committee in Washington, D.C. to answer questions under oath from committee members directly.
I look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
