Maybe they choose to live life that way deliberately as some sort of logical exercise - if we (or at least our bodies) live in a physical realm then it follows that just for that simple reason, one should aim to make that material existence as pleasant as possible, even at the expense of others, but there must necessarily be a lot more than that to their belief system.
