Sabine's view on "metaphysics" actually approaches mine a lot.
Like her, I don't think the brain needs to have capabilities of subatomic interaction to form consciousness.
It doesn't even need such capabilities to be ultimately connected to God. All information is preserved in this universe by known physics. So all paths lead to God, its very self-evident.
But if the brain does have said capacities, it is an even shorter path.
