I don't think giving advice in general is a good thing, and I agree that the best learning experience, or usually the only one is that people see things for themselves. I don't know if that is what you mean too
But in order for that to happen you have to see things clearly first, and need to have an objective view of the situation and of yourself. Seeing deeper causes and so on can only happen once he is ready or open to see them
