If you represent his views correctly, I can understand why he thought he wasted his time.
He is a prescriber of truth rather than a seeker of truth, or at least he wants to prescribe it rather than teach how to seek it.

To clarify: If you want to seek the truth, there is no path, there is no right and wrong, there is no good and evil, if you want to affirm something as truth, every answer must be open for consideration. If the truth can be that the purpose of human life is to dominate, kill and consume other life, there should be nothing in the way of accepting that truth.

It's the same mistake of thinking you become a better person by avoiding committing sins from a list of bad sins. It's the other way around, when you become better, you don't need to avoid them anymore.
