SG1 starts as an attempt of cheap "TV version" of the Stargate movie, fails, takes advantage of the situation to experiment without limits on all sorts of creative sci-fi ideas while trying to keep a continuous cumulative narrative. No formula, no rules and just improvise on the go.
More so than any other sci-fi show like Trek or X-Files or anything.
Later it became a sort of genre of shows, Canadian sci-fi that does this high concept no rules kind of thing. Latest of the genre was Dark Matter (Not the Jodelle one, but that kinda was too, a new one about multi-dimension stuff).
Beacon 23 was derived from this.
