It became stupid when too-old-women started calling themselves "gamer" and now it's an "identity". As far as I know that was the origin of it, and then boys started using the same word in that meaning.

To me a "gamer" sounds like someone who's speculating in stocks or playing around with girls. Playing video/PC games is just an activity, portraying it as something that your entire life revolves around in some fake concept of nostalgia for something that never existed is too cringy for me. It's another aspect of the phoneposter generation where it's socially acceptable to say things like

and then only go and watch vids recommended off the front page off an empty account for the most generic experience possible and then call yourself a "youtuber".
