The built-in inertia of molecules creates a delay in the discharge of karmic imbalances. I'd expect that the smaller the particles, the faster the imbalance is corrected.
This would also explain why the gehenna process in lower dimensions (this is what greys call it, drows on the astral seem to use the same term) is so slow. Karma may just be even larger particles, more immobile and harder to change.
