This is more negative that I usually prefer but honestly I would trim a good chunk of the side cast, or stipulate they can't be the central focus for episodes anymore. I think there's a lot you can do with the family and a few of the better ones and the show could use a return to basics. Not to say it's bad, I just don't prefer the more side-cast heavy plots as often, it feels like the easy way out.
