Yes, trombone is pitched exactly one octave lower than trumpet. As for an easy way to tell a difference (other than range) there really isn't one. They are both conical bore brass instruments, so their timbre is very similar. You just have to listen to music with both and you will eventually develop the ability to tell the difference just by listening.
