You have to actually die to be called "undead" for real, which means all assistant souls die and leave, the collective body of humanity is detached and you stay with your own manifested bodily form. This can be done by yoga, vampirism and other occult and esoteric practices. I think it should be seen as "undead" meaning someone who died and is still here. While a non-undead immortals leaves when they die, and will only come back to guide people if there is a really good reason, and they appear as a light being or ghost when they do this.
