What if she was completely dependent on her ex, and the dude kept her under his thumb so hard she couldn't push back at all. Maybe he was blackmailing her, maybe he had enough leverage to make escaping impossible. So in the end she offed herself just to get out from under that weight.

If that's what happened, then the "abusive ex" theory actually checks out. Which means this whole thing has someone responsible behind it, and the next logical step is making sure that person faces consequences.
