I would ask them how much are x-rays and how much is a clean before the appointment. That should cover it. If it's more than $500 for a check-up, clean and xrays as well (as some minor works like scaling). If you're quoted more, I would go elsewhere.

You also get some money back on Medicare, but you need to pay first. Private health insurance pays the gap between Medicare that is not funded.
