Religion isn't evil though. Keep in mind that 50% of all people have a below average IQ. Religion is an evolutionary adaptation that conscious beings have developed to keep those retards in check.

This has less to do with religion as a whole, it's a byproduct of the twisted beliefs of the Abrahamaic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam). Those were desert religions for roaming nomadic tribes that hijacked the Roman Empire when it became a nation of primarily non-Romans.
