The idea of a shadowban is silly. They could have had him retire instead of doing this continuous release of illness news throughout the season.
But I also have to agree with that commentor and it would be weird if the team doctors didn't find out he was faking a virus.

My headcanon is that the virus is real but he had already lost motivation so he welcomed the excuse to not race and hasn't been trying hard to come back.
