I can't offer help for this in particular but for myself I found that problems such as these are always caused by tight fascia somewhere. I had some kneecap pain a while ago and the source was a very tight spot on the rectus femoris muscle all the way up near the hips.
good chance the problem also goes away if you keep going and flexibility improves
