Yes, it was supposed to be a joke. But I don't think it's that much of an exaggeration? Most chemist jobs are largely routine work, and even research is mostly legwork. If you climb the ladder, you can leave more of that to others, but you'll also have to deal with more boring bureaucracy and such, so I don't think you gain anything in terms of "excitement". Although I have to admit that I'm not very excitable and my perception might be slightly skewed.
