I recently talked with a mate about cassettes who was pissed that everything starts with 10/11t nowadays (used to be different?) because he would also much rather prefer cogs up to 40 with 12 or 13t smallest cog and similar spacing
his schizo theory is that (((they))) don't do that because (((they))) need to limit gearing progress artificially so the people who want that immediately upgrade their groupset when it becomes available with 13/14 speed
