The biggest problem with syncretism is that there's no sense of an original definition, anything and everything is defined external to the source material. There's also the reality that religious concepts change in time as different cultures adapt it to fit their needs. How the Greeks think of one deity is not equivalent to how say the Jews think of the same deity. Historians back then also didn't really have enough information to go around as they took something that looks close enough as if it was the same thing when the Mithraic feast is incomparable with the Jewish passover feast. Looking at religions at its external representation is in and of itself the biggest mistake the commoner makes.
