Actually we're taught Turks done mercenary business almost pretty much everywhere.

Afaik they werent many conversions that way. It's just certain russian knez wanted to adopt it and he was sucessful at it. Afaik supporters of rome still existed, it's just they were not so successful.
Remember though the schism happened in later centuries.
