At dawn on the 1st tension builds up in Guanabara palace. The legalists cut off telephone lines (but forget one) and energy. Generators are activated, to not overcharge them air conditioning is shut down and the heat contributes to the tension.
At 02:00 Âncora gives his word that there will be no attack. Interestingly, Lacerda's Secretary of Security claims that Âncora phoned Aragão and threatened to move the Mech Recon's tanks from the Ministry of War against the marines if they attacked the governor. This is huge but no other source sheds more light on this.
At 03:30 investigators dressed as nurses in a truck loaded with human body parts, with the claim they were recovering a body, got into the Arsenal of the Navy and found the marines were soundly sleeping.
Rumors of marine attacks kept reappearing, at 04:00, 08:00 and 10:00. In the latter, policemen guarding the hills were mistaken for marines because of their similar uniform. Lacerda imagined it could be a psychological tactic to lower his guard. On his sound system he blasted:
"Marines, drop your weapons, because you're being fooled by an unscrupulous officer. Aragão, coward, incestuous, leave your soldiers and come decide this with me. I want to kill you with my revolver, did you hear that, Aragão, man to man."
One of his objectives was to broadcast to the country the aggression he'd suffer. He was still successful in the symbolic value of clinging on to the seat of power, and in addition his continued survival despite being expected to fall was a morale boost to the rebel side.
