Mum's Mazda 2 has lasted forever and it's new but I can see where you are coming from, some do seem to have issues.

Yes and no, most of Australia is suburban, it's really only an issue in the CBD but even then parks are next to non existent so you pretty much have to pay for a park or park outside the CBD and walk. But regardless it's easier to park small cars particularly if they have small front parts.

Yes, that is the kind of var I was looking for, in some ways it is probably better than a Suzuki swift because it looks more utilitarian and kind of like a Jeep.

I don't think they sell them here and if they did they would cost more than my budget of $3000. As an aside I have thought about getting a universal carrier, they are reasonably common(they were actually the most mass produced tracked military vehicle of WW2) and they are small and probably easier to maintain. Australia used and I think produced them as well so they are here.
