Just for the why not factor. Their progression in years (more precisely how many years they served in that rank - Colonel, Lieutenant General, Major General; the last one the equivalent of Colonel General, only at Branco*):
Kruel: 7, 5, 4
Filho: 8, 6, 2
Silva: 8, 6, 6
Branco: 7, 6, 4, 2
It would be more meaningful if we would know the progression of some of their peers, but for Filho and Branco the coup meant a quick bump in their rank. Two pairs can be made from this four names: the first is Kruel and Filho, the second one having slower progression probably due to the already mentioned reasons, and Kruel seems to had better relations with the regime. The second pair is Silva and Branco, the second one had a bit faster progression, maybe that trip to Italy in WWII meant greater military nimbus despite Silva ranked higher in his class.
